The Leg and Whistle football team ramped up the heat – and the homeless population – in hot and humid Chongqing as they took on an expat select in a city short on air conditioning but with enough sense to refuse John Baird entry to any of its hotels.
But while Chengdu’s littlest hobo is used to pavement pillow, the ragtag bunch of Leg misfits experienced a sensation they are seldom acquainted with – victory.
Two goals from the spot for team captain Andrew "Andy" McAuley saw the away team off to a flyer and despite replies from Chongqing to peg the score back to level, a slew of own goal gaffes and a fine solo effort from Terry “the drill” McAllister kept Leg noses just in front.
The Northern Irish goal hero’s day was destined to end in tears, however, as an old-fashioned Indian reducer from one of Chongqing’s South Asian representatives failed to curry favor with McAllister and left him as legless as John Baird at a free bar.
McAuley said he was happy with the result, but added the performance was overshadowed by the injury to McAllister and Duane leaving the poker chips back in Chengdu railway station.
